Microabrasion
Microabrasion is a special polishing technique that can conservatively remove unsightly surfaces stains or spots right before your eyes. The dentist removes microscopic bits of discoloured tooth enamel with an abrasive and a mild acid. Treatment is usually completed within one visit, however for more stubborn stains, bleaching may be required if the desired results cannot be achieved from your microabrasion sessions.
It is difficult to predict whether microabrasion will remove a spot or stain completely, with success dependant on a number of factors, mainly the type and extent of discolouration. It is surprising to note that brown or dark stains are removed more readily than white ones.
Microabrasion is more effective on surface discolouration rather than deeper stains caused by injury or certain medications. Below is a before and after example of this technique in action.
