Laser Dentistry & Fillings

Lasers have long been used in various fields of Medicine. North Adelaide Dental Care was part of the introduction of Lasers in Dentistry into Australia in the 1980s as one of the first dental practices in Australia to use a true laser for dental treatment. We use the Fidelis and Smartlite laser. Fidelis is the world's fastest and most advanced laser for dental fillings and Smartlite is used for laser teeth whitening and cosmetic gum surgery.

Dentists at North Adelaide Dental Care have been certified to use lasers for dental treatment. Our Fidelis dental laser can be used instead of a drill to quickly, safely and effectively remove decay often without requiring the use of needles.

Dr Greg Miller has also been an honorary Clinical Tutor for the University of Adelaide Dental School and has produced a lecture series on Laser Dentistry for undergraduate dental students at the University of Adelaide.

The benefits of using lasers instead of drills include:

  • No/minimal needles required for fillings.
  • No need to use a dental drill.
  • No high pitched drilling noise.
  • Less discomfort during and after treatment.
  • Less damage to teeth compared to using a dental drill.
  • Reduced treatment time.
  • Protects teeth against tooth decay.
  • Fewer visits to the dentist.
  • No needle Laser fillings
  • Ultra conservative decay removal

*Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner

Laser Gum Surgery

Lasers can be used on the gums for a variety of reasons. For example when decay extends below the gum level, the laser is used to trim the gum back so a filling can be placed more easily (see the before and after pictures below). Using the laser in this way is very effective as lasers are very good at stopping the gums from bleeding straight away and more importantly patients report minimal discomfort following this type of procedure.
