Dr. Greg Miller Visits Adelaide Zoo

Dr Greg Miller recently made a special visit to the Adelaide Zoo to support the ongoing health and wellbeing of some of its most charismatic residents. The highlight of the day? A very special dental check-up for Kluet the orangutan—one of the zoo’s most beloved animals.

As part of the Australian Dental Foundation’s ongoing outreach and advocacy for oral health, Dr Miller’s visit to the zoo was a reminder that good dental care isn’t just for humans. Animals, particularly those in professional care like zoos, also require regular health checks, and that includes their teeth. Working alongside the Adelaide Zoo’s dedicated veterinary team, Dr Miller offered his expertise in assessing Kluet’s oral health, checking for signs of decay, gum disease, or other potential issues that could affect the orangutan’s overall wellbeing.

The dental examination was no small task. Orangutans are known for their incredible strength and intelligence, and any medical procedure involves careful planning and expert handling. Under general anaesthetic and surrounded by a team of veterinary and dental professionals, Kluet received a thorough examination and cleaning, ensuring his teeth remain strong and healthy. For Dr Miller, the experience was both a professional challenge and a personal privilege.

“It’s not every day you get to perform a dental exam on an orangutan,” Dr Miller said. “But oral health is crucial for all living beings. It impacts nutrition, comfort, and overall health. Being able to lend our skills to care for animals like Kluet is an incredibly rewarding experience.”

Beyond the dental treatment itself, the visit also served as an opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of oral health—both in people and animals. The Australian Dental Foundation’s mission has always extended beyond the dental chair. With a focus on outreach, education, and improving access to care for vulnerable populations, the Foundation continually seeks new ways to promote oral health across all sectors of the community.

The visit to the Adelaide Zoo was not only a collaboration between animal and human healthcare providers, but also an engaging way to bring public attention to the importance of dental hygiene. Zoo visitors, staff, and media all took interest in the day’s activities, reinforcing the message that oral health is a vital part of overall wellbeing.

As Dr Miller and the Foundation continue their work across Australia—reaching remote communities, schools, and those most in need—their commitment to innovation, education, and compassionate care remains front and centre. Whether it’s a child’s first dental visit in a regional classroom or a full dental check-up for an orangutan named Kluet, the Australian Dental Foundation is dedicated to making a difference—one smile at a time.
